Amy . . .

What would you like to know? I am fun, but crazy. I have a most perfect husband, and 2 cats named Samson and Delilah. We are presently working on adopting a little girl from China and have a separate blog for that. I am a Christian and am working on a better relationship with him. I live in the Atlanta area and love sharing stories with people. I am also a pediatric nurse and I love it! I love to talk and meet new people and I love Disney Cruising

I love biographies. Check out My Life in Francey by Julia Child and her nephew, his name escapes me.

My son, Gus, was in the NICU for almost 6 months...I would read most afternoons while I held him. I found a book at the library called "Another Hand On Mine" by William Peterson. It is a book about Carl Becker who was a missionary in the Congo, I believe in the 60's. I would love to have my own copy of this book...I couldn't put it down! When you asked for recommendations this is the first one I thought of..hope your library has it!

I don't read enough biographies, so I will follow along and hopefully pick up some good recommendations.

I bought my mom Hilary Clinton's biography & she (and my dad) said it was a very interesting read.

Anne Lamott has several excellent biographical essay collections - Travelling Mercies (which is about her faith), Operating Instructions - notes on her son's first year and being a first time parent

The Long Walk To Freedom is Nelson Mandela's and I loved it.

Thanks for coming to my blog! I second the suggestion for Anne Lammont's books. I love Operating Instructions.

Biographies can be great... but some (even by people who I usually find interesting or lively) can be dull. Make sure you flip to a random page and like the writing style! Once I tired to read one about Hirohito that I bought in an airport and was very sad indeed to find that I did not like the writing style. I never did finish it.

Do they have to be full length ones? Men of Destiny and Men of Purpose by Peter Masters are good mini biographies. Also war and grace....which is some where on my blog, is great. I am currently reading 'More love to Thee'- Elizabeth Prentiss, by Sharon James.

If you like Presidential biographies or autobiographies, then I would suggest Edmund Morris' series about Teddy Roosevelt, and Grant's Autobiography, which I haven't read myself but it is supposed to be the gold standard of presidential memoirs.

The Hiding Place is one of my favorite books of all time, biography or otherwise! I also just finished Mockingbird by Charles J. Shields, a biography of Harper Lee, and I found it to be a pretty good read. It tells the story behind To Kill a Mockingbird and also the story behind Truman Capote's book In Cold Blood, which Lee did extensive (and uncredited) work on. Interesting stuff!

I have a couple of recommendations:

Ruth Bell Graham's by Patricia Cornwall.

Laura Bush's -- don't remember the author

I'll have to check out my bookshelves for others. Great goal, btw.

Glad you posted this. I'm trying to read at least 12 bios this year. I've read a bio on Doris Roberts (the lady that plays Marie on Everybody Loves Raymond) and I'm looking forward to reading more. I'm going to jot down some that have been suggested to you.

This is my first blog comment ever! I couldn't resist as biographies are my favorite reading. Two suggestions:

The First American - The Life and Times of Benamin Franklin by HW Brands

Founding Mothers - The Women who Rasied our Nation by Cokie Roberts (You can tell by the title this book is about several women but gives an awesome glimpse into several women's contribution to the founding of our nation)
